The City of Fresno experienced a surge in gang crime in 2006. Violent street gangs are responsible for over 50% of murders and shootings in the City of Fresno. In order to address the prevention and intervention needs, the Mayor and the Chief announced the Mayor's Gang Prevention Initiative (MGPI).
The goal of MGPI is to prevent youth crime, violence and gang involvement while developing a positive working relationship between law enforcement, schools, families, and young people to create a safer community. In furtherance of the goal, MGPI works closely with law enforcement to identify gang members wanting to leave the lifestyle, helping them gain the necessary skill set to gain employment, and providing services needed to help them become successful and productive citizens.
